Hugo
“I just hope that now he’s realised she isn’t coming back, he might actually start listening to me. We can’t keep going the way we are. It’s great that he’s bringing in so much money, but the cost to him is too great. I’ve never seen him so stressed and alone.”
Meg stared out across the water from beside me on the tree branch. It had become the place we visited most often because it meant we could talk and spend time together without the risk of being seen or being in a position to take things between us any further – not that we couldn’t figure out how to do things from inside a tree – but that wasn’t what our relationship was about. We needed each other more than we needed sex. Sex would complicate things further...
She’d come to understand how important my brother had been in my life, and therefore also understood why I wanted to look out for her brother too, even though he seemed to think I was the enemy. Family was important when you didn’t have much.
“What about that girl you said he likes – Yvonne Rhodes wasn’t it? Do you think part of his stress is because he’s denying himself a relationship in the same way he’s denying you?”
Our hands were entwined and she rested her head against my shoulder. “I think so. He’s had a thing for her for years, and he’s probably beating himself up for not taking the chance with her while he had it. I hope he hasn’t blown it. He may never be OK with me dating if he lets a relationship with her slip away.”
“He’ll come around. Once he sees I’m not a threat–”
“Have they told you when you fight him yet?” she interrupted.
I shook my head. “No. But, I asked to only be pitted against him if absolutely necessary.”
She lifted her head to look at me. “And they just do as you ask?”
“No.” I smiled as I turned to meet her eyes. “I had to slip the scheduler some cash, but he assured me we won’t be against each other until Zac makes the semi-finals.”
“And you’re sure he’s going to get there?”
Pressing my lips together, I reached out and tucked her hair behind her ear, briefly stroking her cheek. “He’s an excellent fighter. He’s going to make it, and when he goes against me, I’ll take a fall to get him into the title fight. We want him to have the best chance at winning so he’s out from Nelson’s thumb.” Both Meg and Zac still believed that if he won, he’d go on to the next level and Nelson would be out of their lives. I was trying to think of a way for them to barter their freedom, but I hadn’t worked it out yet. Our best bet was getting Zac into the final and betting big so they could possibly buy his freedom. Zac didn’t have the right mentality to be a permanent fighter on the circuit.
